The Karelian Zoo is located in the Sortavala District of the Republic of Karelia. Founded in 2011, it was originally called Zoogreenpark.
The Karelian Zoo is the largest zoo in the northwestern region of Russia. Surrounded by pristine natural surroundings, it is home to the largest collection of animals from around the world.
More than 500 animals and birds, including rare species listed in the Red Book, are housed here. The landscaped zoo covers a whopping 30 hectares, or roughly the size of 60 football fields!
The impressive overall scale and spacious animal areas are the hallmark of the Karelian Zoo. Its inhabitants live outdoors, surrounded by ecologically clean lakes and dense Karelian forest. The animals enjoy excellent living conditions that are as close as possible to their natural habitat.
The zoo is open seven days a week, from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM (in summer, from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM).
